Domburg: Healing seaside resort
The sea, the beach and the dunes have exerted a strong attraction for centuries. As early as the 17th century, wealthy city dwellers had beautiful country estates built here. In the 19th century, Domburg became a renowned seaside resort. European nobility and the upper class were drawn to the healing properties of seawater. It is no coincidence that Domburg has an official bathing status. Experience it yourself: a walk on the beach, a refreshing dip in the sea or waking up in the sea air does wonders for your health.
Domburg has even been awarded two tourist stars by Michelin. This places the seaside resort among a select group of Dutch destinations that have received this recognition, including Giethoorn and Kinderdijk. The stars are awarded to places with a clear tourist appeal and a unique experience.
The Manteling
Domburg borders the Manteling nature reserve. The trees with their sometimes bizarre shapes are striking. These trees can be seen in some of Piet Mondrian’s works. In Terra Maris museum, located at Kasteel Westhove, you can learn more about the Manteling.
The beach
Of course, the beach! Domburg’s beach is one of the top 15 most beautiful beaches in Zeeland. The wide beach extends all the way to Westkapelle and is known for its characteristic groynes, beach cabins and mundane atmosphere.
The ‘Zeeuwse licht’
Domburg is a source of inspiration for artists such as Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop. They descended on the ‘Zeeland light’. In the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum, you will get to know the artist colony that experienced its greatest flowering in Domburg in the 19th century to the early 20th century.
Active in nature
